What to expect?

What to expect from psychological therapy?

I will help you see yourself as a whole, getting to know the ways in which you relate to your thoughts, emotions, bodily reactions, and the people around you. Together, we will unpick the core messages—spoken or unspoken—that you tell yourself about your potential for change. We will explore when and where these messages originated and, most importantly, how they have managed to survive. Finally, I will support you in creating a plan to challenge these patterns, helping you to shift your self-esteem and relationships in a positive direction.

What to expect from our first therapy meeting?

I provide psychological therapy via video conference or telephone. Remote therapy has been shown to be as effective as in-person support.

Sessions last 50 minutes, during which we will explore the reasons you are seeking therapy, any ambivalence you may feel about engaging in the process, and your expectations. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about my approach and areas of expertise. Together, we will assess whether I am the right person to support you.

What to expect from gender assessments?

I work collaboratively with trans and non-binary people seeking access to gender-affirming care. I believe that assessments should never feel like gatekeeping. My approach is compassionate and collaborative, rooted in the informed consent model. I also believe that gender can be expansive, for this reason, I aim to understand your unique experience of your gender, rather than fitting you into normative forms of existing.

The process of accessing gender-affirming care can be emotional, challenging, and at times frustrating, as the system is often difficult to navigate. My role is to accompany you—offering expert guidance and psychological insight—as together we make sense of your gendered experiences and support your next steps.

As part of my assessments, I will help you understand any factors that might influence or complicate your journey with hormone treatment or surgery.

Most people complete their assessment with me in one session and are subsequently able to access hormones or surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What should I know about your practice?

I am an independent Consultant Clinical Psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and a member of relevant professional bodies, including World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), European Professional Association of Transgender Health (EPATH), British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS), and the British Psychological Society (BPS). Furthermore, I am a recognised Gender Dysphoria Specialist by the UK Ministry of Justice. This means my reports are accepted as ‘Report A’ for Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) applications. For more detailed information regarding my qualifications and experience, please refer to my website’s homepage.

What does the assessment process involve?

The standard assessment for Gender Incongruence (ICD-11) or Gender Dysphoria (DSM-5-TR) typically lasts around 45 minutes. During this time, we will explore your personal circumstances, gender history, and relevant mental and physical health background. The primary objective is to determine whether you meet the formal diagnostic criteria.

If you have scheduled an extended assessment (up to 80 minutes total) to access gender-affirming treatments, the additional time is dedicated to exploring your specific treatment goals and reviewing the potential benefits and risks of accessing hormones or surgery. We also consider any potential factors—such as aspects of your mental health—that might affect your adaptation to medication or treatment, ensuring all subsequent steps are taken safely.

How many sessions are typically required to complete the assessment?

Most individuals successfully complete their assessment within one consultation. Approximately one in ten people may require a follow-up session. It is very rare for more than one follow-up to be necessary; this generally occurs when an individual’s circumstances involve heightened complexity.

Am I required to legally change my name to access gender-affirming treatments or a diagnosis?

No, you are not. Though if you are planning to live in your chosen gender role, this would be beneficial. If you are a British national, you can proceed with this change requesting an either enrolled or unenrolled Deed Poll. If you are not a British national, I recommend that you reach out to your consulate.

Am I required to be living full-time in my chosen gender role to access gender-affirming treatments?

Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy (HRT) is proven to significantly enhance the mental health and well-being of transgender and non-binary individuals, it is also important to anticipate that some emotional adjustments may occur during the initial months of adaptation.

For this reason, we advise that you have informed at least a small circle of people in your life who can accompany and support you during this period of adjustment. During your initial consultation, we will consider your specific circumstances to establish a tailored support plan.

Furthermore, it is highly beneficial to have already gained some lived experience of your affirmed gender. This includes having people in your life address you by your chosen name and pronouns, and seeking out spaces where you can freely express your gender through your presentation (e.g., using the clothing and style that best represents your gender identity).

When will I receive the clinical report?

You will receive your report within two weeks of your final consultation. When you book, you will be offered an expedited option to receive the report within 48 hours for an additional fee of £50. Should you request any changes to the report, please allow a further 48 hours for the amendments to be processed.

What is the purpose of the clinical report?

The report confirms that you meet the diagnostic criteria for either Gender Incongruence or Gender Dysphoria. This document serves two primary purposes:

  1. Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC): It is accepted as ‘Report A’ for a GRC application.
  2. Medical Care Access: If the assessment was for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or gender-affirming surgery, the report provides evidence that you are psychologically prepared and have the capacity to consent to the proposed treatment.

What happens after I receive my diagnosis?

Once a diagnosis is established, I will promptly prepare a detailed clinical report summarising the findings and my recommendations. My reports are accepted by providers both within the UK and internationally. You can submit this report to your chosen medical provider, who will then be able to guide you on the next steps in your care pathway.

I am seeking Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT); what are the next steps after diagnosis?

Following your diagnosis, you will submit my clinical report to your chosen endocrinology provider. (I work closely with the Gender Hormone Clinic, but you are free to choose any other provider). The general pathway for accessing HRT is as follows:

  1. Initial Consultation: The private endocrine provider will conduct an initial consultation, usually including a physical examination and requesting a series of baseline blood tests.
  2. Second Consultation & Prescription: After the results are available, you will have a second consultation. The clinician will review the results and, if appropriate, provide your first hormonal prescription.
  3. Shared-Care Agreement: Your endocrine provider will typically liaise with your GP to establish a Shared-Care Agreement for ongoing monitoring and prescription management. I recommend contacting your chosen provider directly for their specific, detailed protocol.
